The Commissioner for Public Appointments

The Role of Public Bodies

Ministers make a large number of appointments to regional and national public bodies each year.

Ministers make a large number of appointments to regional and national public bodies each year. These bodies act to a greater or lesser extent at arms’ length from Ministers although Ministers remain accountable for the bodies’ performance. The Commissioner is currently responsible for the appointments processes to the boards of some 1,000 national and regional public bodies.

All of these bodies play an important role in shaping and influencing national policy and decision making.

Different regulatory arrangements apply to public appointments processes in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
